My wife Andri and I came to the states in 2004 just after getting married in Bali, Indonesia where she was born and I grew up from the age of 14.
Tempeh is an every day part of the diet in Bali, so when we came back and found that even though we could find tempeh here, that is was not anything like we were used to and we were not fans of the taste.
Andri's and I started making tempeh for personal use in my home town of Anchorage, Alaska where we were living at the time.
Very soon after we started, the word got out and we began receiving orders. The Indonesian community in Alaska was very small (about 20 - 25 people) so it was still just a hobby.
In 2011 we moved to Houston where there is an Indonesian community of 10,000 -12,000. With the help of my Dad/partner we built a small food manufacturing facility where we can produce about 800 Tempeh per day.
